isn’t it all true that teh hurricanes bring in some of that garbage as well as the cruise ships and the current takes that onto shore? We see a lot of trash in the jungles which is always so very strange to see, last year we traveled to the Sian Ka’an and we were mortified to see the amount of trash….I took a photo of the most amazing pile of shoes I’ve ever seen.
We were saddened by the sight at teh “nature reserve” – how about for every bag of garbage you pick up off the Sian beach the hotels and tourista businesses donates $5 to the reserve!?
Although we were disturbed by the sight, we do plan on visting agian, we love it there!
I can testify to how bad the garbage problem is. Apparently, Roberto Hernández Ramírez — an alleged narco-banker heavily involved in cocaine trafficking, the CEO of Mexico’s 2nd largest bank, and a member of the administration board of the Rockefeller-owned Citigroup — owns the Sian Ka’an coastline and the cocaine boats that come ashore from Colombia allegedly cause much of the garbage there. At least, that’s the story as I heard it. It makes sense that the garbage would remain so incredibly bad there, as this would keep tourists away and allow more anonymity for the cocaine boats that come in at night.
