Hey Jurgen. I agree with you, there is a widespread knee-jerk fatalism here. I also think (more so the more I read and hear) that Tuesday's tragedy could well have been just that - a tragic accident.

BUT, as journalists, we have to consider the possibilities, which is what this article tried to do. Conspiracy theory or not, speculations must be made, even if that's all that they are.

But let's not generalize - some Mexican friends of mine who are typical, knee-jerk fatalists have dismissed the conspiracy theories of fellow Mexicans and called the plane crash down as an accident.

Crucially, Mexicans generally take the truth as presented by the authorities as doctored in some way, and there are many valid reasons for that. I, for one, understand completely their skeptical attitude. But let's wait and see what the week brings.

Either which way, there will be those voices that dismiss the results of this investigation as a lie whatever it says.

Dear Deborah: Unlike you, I did get to watch the coverage of the crash with my intellectual Mexican friends. Sitting around the living room and smoking like fiends, they declared unisono that the narco was behind the crash and that the government would do all it could to sell it as an accident. Living in Mexico one feels tempted to adopt this widespread knee-jerk paranoia/fatalism and accept that as a general rule the opposite of what media and politicians say is true. But I do wonder about that. Would it be completely absurd to assume that the plane crash was an accident after all? Would it be grossly naive to think that the authorities handed the black box to the US Transportation Safety Board in order to find out and publish the truth? Would it be an intellectual sell-out to halt the speculation-mongering until the results are in? Naive or not, I myself prefer not to pin the crash on Vicente Fox or Carlos Salinas just yet.
