I must admit I was rather casual about how I went about safety and planning work/travel on trips before doing the AKE course. I would point out though that the Rory Peck Trust offers bursaries to freelancers for hostile environment training. For a freelancer planning to go somewhere a bit hectic it's definitely worth looking into.
